Warner Bros. Discovery has partnered with Google Cloud to use artificial intelligence-powered tools to create subtitles for its content platform.
Caption AI is powered by Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform and will initially be deployed in unscripted programming to reduce the time and production costs involved in subtitling sports and reality TV content, WBD said, adding that real humans will continue to oversee the use of Caption AI for quality assurance for studio channels such as Max, CNN and Discovery+.
“Providing high-quality subtitles to our audiences is critical to Warner Bros. Discovery. Working with Google Cloud to leverage Vertex AI within Warner Bros. Discovery’s subtitling AI workflow has not only helped us accelerate the subtitling process, but also improved efficiency, speed, and reduced costs,” Avi Saxena, chief technology officer for consumer at WBD, said in a statement.
The studio claims Caption AI reduces the time required to create subtitles by 80 percent compared to manual subtitling, and lowers subtitling costs for creators by up to 50 percent.
“AI has the potential to transform a variety of processes across the media and entertainment industry with real business impact, and with their subtitling solution, we see a great example of how AI agents can save organizations time and money,” Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian added in a separate statement.
The introduction of Caption AI comes as Hollywood studios want to protect their libraries of movies and TV series from piracy by AI companies, while also saving time and money by letting content creators use new AI tools in their production pipelines.
