Amid concerns about the encryption of helmet communications in college football, Texas Tech University is asking the Big 12 for a report on the integrity of two recent games.
ESPN’s Max Olson reported Wednesday afternoon that helmet communications throughout this college football season have been conducted on unsecure frequencies, frequencies that are theoretically accessible to anyone.
Red Raiders athletic director Kirby Hocutt told Olson that he wanted Olson to play a game “on a Saturday afternoon that leaves no doubt of his integrity.” “We owe it to the 120 young people on our soccer team to make sure that happens, that it’s a fair competition and that the same rules apply.”
The games Texas Tech wants clarity on are a 59-35 loss to Baylor on Oct. 19 and a 35-34 loss to TCU on Saturday. The Red Raiders will play Iowa State on Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
GSC, which provides helmet communication devices, is reportedly working on encrypting communication devices through software updates. This season will be the first in which helmet communication is legal across the FBS.
