Tennessee Tech University announced that its computer science department rose 56 spots, making it one of the top three computer science programs in the state.
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee Technological University has reached a milestone as the nation’s top university for 10 consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report.
The magazine’s 2025 rankings recognized the school in nine categories, up from eight last year, ranking the top schools in the areas of social mobility, business, computer science, engineering, nursing and psychology. It ranked 158th among the top public schools in the country.
“Tech has also been named to U.S. News’ list of top public universities, ‘A+ Schools for B Students,’ and most importantly, its list of Best American Colleges,” the university said in a statement. “As with last year, the U.S. News 2025 rankings show that Tech graduates have the lowest median debt among all Tennessee public university graduates.”
Tennessee Tech announced that its computer science department rose 56 spots to become one of the top three computer science departments in the state and the top two among public universities. The university also ranked in the top two among Tennessee public universities for engineering, freshman retention, graduation rate, ACT scores and graduate earnings.
“Tennessee Tech continues to be an example within our state and beyond for providing a high-quality, affordable education, a vibrant campus experience, and producing work-ready graduates,” Tennessee Tech President Phil Oldham said in a statement. “As we celebrate our 10th consecutive year on U.S. News’ list of the top universities in the nation, we recognize all of the students, alumni, faculty and staff who contributed to this milestone achievement and are committed to building on the progress we’ve made together.”
A total of 15 Tennessee schools were named to the list of best colleges in the nation, the university said in a release.
“Tech’s inclusion in the U.S. News rankings comes as the university recently announced it will further increase its enrollment for the fall 2024 semester, the fourth-largest class in the university’s history and the largest total enrollment since 2015,” the university said in a statement.

Tennessee Tech said the 2025 rankings were calculated using 17 key measures of academic quality among national universities, according to U.S. News.
