Educators have a responsibility to ensure that the brightest minds are encouraged and supported in technology, regardless of age, gender, or background. Diverse perspectives set out to make AI and technology the most meaningful contribution to society, but opening up educational opportunities to everyone is key to achieving this.
There is a clear gender disparity in STEM careers. As of 2023, women will make up just 23% of the global technology, information and media workforce. Although this may seem small, it is actually an increase from the previous year. Throughout history, women have been underrepresented at the cutting edge of technology. Even as they achieved great milestones and innovated great technologies, their stories remained in the shadows. However, advances in AI are creating a talent shortage, and women are stepping up to the plate.
Developing a comprehensive curriculum
Media, job seekers, employers, and educators are working to encourage women to enter STEM fields, especially advances in AI. There is room for debate as to whether sufficient efforts are being made. Persistent gender disparities also impact the motivations of female students to enroll in STEM. There is a mismatch between female students who score high on science and technology aptitude tests and those same students’ interest in STEM career paths.
When creating curriculum, educators must keep diversity and inclusion top of mind. This will now include:
Diverse perspectives that resonate with learners’ identities and interests, such as female role models in the field. Demonstrated how students can apply the information they learn in real-life situations, such as discussing applications of AI in healthcare and social justice. For example, we discuss gender bias and how AI can contribute to or eradicate gender bias in research samples and recruitment processes.
It is important to remember that inclusivity benefits everyone and provides all students with a more comprehensive experience and understanding of the subject matter. Underrepresented groups, such as women and underrepresented technical students, will feel more empowered to contribute to the field when they see themselves reflected in success stories.
Offering a variety of mentorship programs
In addition to weaving diverse perspectives into the curriculum, educators can provide diverse instructional opportunities for students. In mentoring, it is important to have a safe space for students, especially girls, to ask questions, seek guidance, and build confidence. Diverse mentors and an intuitive matching process open up a whole new world for students to start believing in their technology abilities. For example, female mentors can also provide insight into possible career paths and even employment opportunities in emerging industries. This ability to rely on someone they trust helps students make informed decisions and develop the skills they need to power their future in AI and technology.
Getting creative: Promoting gender diversity in AI and technology
Attracting women to STEM requires a little creativity. In traditionally male-dominated fields, it can be intimidating to participate for fear of being repressed, harassed, or silenced. Many female students know the value they can bring to the technical table, but they need an extra push to ensure their voices are heard.
Innovative solutions to attract female technology students include hands-on events. Consider organizing a hackathon that focuses on a real-world problem, such as sustainability or another field of your students’ choosing. By encouraging everyone to participate, we can show women the real impact their technology skills can have on the world and the topics they’re passionate about.
Educators can also host workshops featuring women in technology. Interactive webinars and face-to-face conversations with inspiring female STEM professionals will open your eyes to your students’ potential futures. Organizing hands-on activities like building a website or building a mobile app with AI features is a great way to boost confidence and get your wheels turning with the help of established role models. Resources like Girls Who Code and League of Women Coders can connect educators and their students with women in STEM fields. These communities also provide a level of camaraderie and support that can help increase the confidence of women entering and making an impact in the AI and technology space.
As well as advances in technology
As educators, we need inclusion to drive innovation and empower future change makers. Encouraging girls and young women to pursue careers in technology and AI creates future role models and balances the inequitable landscape of the tech industry. A more inclusive and just technology ecosystem benefits everyone, helping diverse minds come together to create AI and technology that solves societal problems and helps build a brighter future.
