The way people use the Internet is constantly changing, and so are the risks associated with it online. Learn how to avoid phishing scams and stay safe online this October, with help from experts during Cybersecurity Month.
“In today’s world of cybersecurity, threats seem to be lurking around every corner,” said Byron Sosa, director of cybersecurity at Lake County College. “But by developing good cybersecurity habits, you can take the first step toward reducing the risk of your identity, information, and money being stolen.”
CLC’s Cybersecurity team will be holding four virtual workshops during October, each covering a different topic to help you stay safe while online. Each project is led by a CLC expert or another expert from the local workforce.
• Cyber Shield: Tips to strengthen your account defense, Wednesday, Oct. 2, noon and 6 p.m. Cybersecurity tips to protect your accounts in everyday life and best practices for creating strong, secure passwords. This includes advice on techniques such as length, complexity, and the use of passphrases. This event will introduce you to password managers, which are used to securely store and manage passwords, and explain the importance of multi-factor authentication and how it works to add an extra layer of security.
• CLC and Cybersecurity Careers: True Stories, Wednesday, Oct. 9, at noon and 6 p.m. Former CLC student and cybersecurity intern Juliana Zarinana shares her experiences and insights, providing a realistic view of the cybersecurity work landscape, including its challenges. and the opportunities she encountered during her college years and career. She provides practical insights into the cybersecurity industry and shares her experience and most in-demand skills.
• Dark Web Intelligence, Wednesday, Oct. 16, noon and 6 p.m. Learn what the dark web is and why it’s important to your cybersecurity operations with Sentinel, an Illinois-based company with a global presence. Real-world cases in which dark web intelligence played a key role in solving crimes and preventing cyber-attacks will be examined. Participants will understand the fundamentals of the dark web, including its infrastructure and the technologies that support it. This session will also provide a clear understanding of the ethical and legal considerations when operating on the dark web.
• Cybersecurity Threat Landscape Overview, Wednesday, Oct. 23, noon and 6 p.m. Supervisory Special Agent Ray Miller, a member of the FBI’s Chicago office, provides an overview of the various cybersecurity threats he sees on the “front lines.” ” and share some tips on how to protect yourself from these threats. This presentation will help you understand the latest cybersecurity threats identified by the FBI, from phishing scams to sophisticated nation-state attacks. Attendees will gain knowledge about practical tips and best practices to protect themselves from these threats, including using strong passwords, enabling MFA, and being aware of phishing attacks.
