Founded in 2020, Reaction Technologies is a client of Lawrence Technological University’s Centrepolis Accelerator in Southfield, which serves emerging manufacturing startups.
The company was founded after co-founder Brandon Martin witnessed a 13-year-old football player become paralyzed after a deadly head impact, which Martin says gave him a new idea for a football training device that has now become a business.
This product is an accessory that goes around a tackle dummy and displays numbers on a large LCD screen. A player hitting the practice dummy must tell his coach what numbers he sees. If a player approaches the dummy with improper and dangerous head-down technique, he will not be able to see the numbers and will not be able to communicate the numbers to his coach. The coach will then take the player aside and coach him on proper and safe tackling technique.
“Coaches are looking for ways to minimize the impact of a head fall,” Martin said. “I think our product really makes a difference.”
The product was tested at Lawrence Technological University in June during practice leading up to the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association All-Star Game, and will be further tested with high school and youth teams this fall. LTU’s speed and conditioning coaches are also working with Reaction Technologies to fine-tune the product.
Martin said he began working on his product at Ann Arbor Spark, a startup accelerator, and a staff member there introduced him to Southfield-based Centerpolis, one of the few business accelerators in the country that focuses on physical products rather than software or apps.
Martin said he hopes Reaction Technologies’ product will be on the market in early 2025 with a price tag of $379.
