At the company’s flagship event, Meta Connect 2024, CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced Orion, a smartglasses that he claims are “the most advanced glasses the world has ever seen.” It is the company’s most ambitious product to date. Zuckerberg proclaimed that “the best minds in the world” are developing Orion smartglasses, and demonstrated a fully functional prototype live on stage. With Orion, Reality Lab’s goal of developing a next-generation large computing platform that delivers deep presence as if you were actually there with the other person is closer to reality, Zuckerberg continued.
Orion, the company’s first consumer-grade full holographic augmented reality glasses, is a standalone smartglasses with a vivid holographic display that does not require cables and weighs less than 100 grams. According to Zuckerberg, the display of Orion glasses is not a typical display, but an entirely new display architecture made of special silicon and sensors, and a small projector with nanoscale components. These smartglasses will work with voice and AI control just like regular smartglasses. In addition, they will support neural interfaces powered by a wrist-based neural interface developed by the company.
The company is reportedly further optimizing Orion Glass to make it more stylish and compact, and is also focusing on production to bring costs down. Meta plans to use Orion Glass primarily as a development kit in-house, and also build software around it.
