New York City attempts to use AI to scan subways for weapons, but fails miserably as no actual guns are detected and the system is flooded with false positives

Eat to your heart’s content, Eric Adams.

fallacy of deception

New York City has been forced to reveal that its AI-powered gun scanning experiment in its vast subway system was a total failure.

As CBS New York reports, experts who have long opposed Evolv startup’s AI subway scanning technology (defended by embattled Mayor Eric Adams) are now questioning its legitimacy now that the pilot has been shelved. Proven.

After the city and state pointed out that the New York City Police Department had been silent about a month-long experiment that began in late July, authorities said the overwhelming number of firearms recovered on subway scanners was exactly zero. We were forced to reveal the results on our website. And 12 knives. These numbers were dwarfed by the fact that we also found over 118 false positives.

“118 more New Yorkers have been subject to additional enforcement and searches, and had their privacy violated for no reason,” Legal Aid Society attorney Diane Ackerman told CBS. “Given the fact that the NYPD recorded 12 knives and no arrests were made, I believe these were perfectly legal knives.”

Evolv’s scanner has proven to be highly flawed, even giving false positives multiple times when a certain CBS reporter entered the scanner in 2022 and again earlier this year. . Talk about misfires.

Despite the pilot’s apparent failure, city officials are still touting the technology as a good thing, claiming it deterred crime.

“During this pilot program, no shootings occurred at subway stations where Evolv technology was installed,” an NYPD spokesperson told CBS.

While that is undoubtedly true, there are other possible explanations for these statistics as well. The New York Times reported in 2022 that despite what some experts would have you believe, subway violence is actually extremely rare, with only 1 million violent acts occurring. It only occurs once per ride.

Furthermore, the program was only implemented for one month at 20 of New York’s 472 subway stations. This is hardly enough time to prove a deterrent effect, but it is certainly long enough to demonstrate how immature the technology is.
