The San Francisco 49ers have been plagued by injuries, so the team needed someone to step up and fill the void. That’s what one of the wide receivers did on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. Jauan Jennings had 11 catches for 175 yards and three touchdowns. He was nearly unstoppable, having the type of game that 49ers fans used to see from Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens.
On Friday, 49ers radio voice Greg Papa sat down with head coach Kyle Shanahan to discuss the 49ers Game Plan on NBC Sports Bay Area. Among the topics they discussed was Jennings’ performance. Papa asked Shanahan how Jennings continues to get open and create separation despite lacking straight-line speed.
“He’s probably been the best separator here the last few years,” Shanahan said. “He’s very hard. The way he gets off the ball, when he hits contact, he doesn’t slow down at all. When someone’s grabbing him, he acts like he’s being grabbed. He fights through everything. The way he blocks is the way he runs routes. It’s just his mindset that no one can stop him.
“Having that kind of mindset, having some size and sneaky strength, and yeah, he might not have the fastest time, and when he’s doing the fastest tests, but I I don’t think he was a good tester. He didn’t jump.”He’s the best at the combine, but it’s kind of unusual that this guy can do a 360 dunk, but he plays it the right way. He always had the spirit to play football. And he got more chances in this. In the games that Devo (Samuel) is out, he would say if he had more opportunities he would do it every week, and I don’t think he’s wrong. ”
Dad talked about Jennings’ long arms and 6’3 frame and how he had great success playing catch. Papa pointed out that of Jennings’ 11 catches in Sunday’s game, five were considered contested. He asked Shanahan what he thought about the catch Jennings made when he went over the Rams’ safety for the highlight reel grab, especially QB Brock Purdy’s decision to throw the ball to Jennings, who was well covered. Ta.
“When you’re told, oh yeah, that’s that coverage, usually in that coverage there’s someone sitting right there,” Shanahan added. “So it’s a three-level throw, so it’s supposed to go to the top level or the bottom level, but not the middle level. So when he threw it, I was a little nervous, but right away I forgot. It was a great read because every time you throw and they make a play, we keep it moving and move on to the next play. It was a great play, so I’m glad Brock gave him that opportunity.”
Jennings has stepped up every chance he gets. Nicknamed “Third-and-Jawan” by fans for his ability to turn third downs into first downs, he became a versatile threat for the 49ers. With tight end George Kittle back this week against the New England Patriots and Samuel likely back, Jennings may not need to repeat last Sunday’s performance. But when such an opportunity comes, Jennings has the mindset to achieve great success for the team.
