On September 26th, education leaders from across the Commonwealth gathered in the Capitol Rotunda, where We Read Computer Science (CS) joined the Chamber of Commerce to partner with businesses and schools to build the state’s technology talent pipeline. announced a small grant of $100,000.
“The work We Lead CS is doing will help increase our state’s competitiveness in the technology economy and expand our ability to educate and prepare high school students for the technology workforce,” said Education Secretary Robbie Fletcher. Ta.

We Lead CS is a virtual computer science career academy established by the Kentucky General Assembly serving students across Kentucky. The organization plans to hire 300 new students for the 2025-2026 school year.
Alicia Sells, chief executive officer of We Lead CS, said the microgrant program allows chambers of commerce across the state to connect employers with We Lead CS students, providing job shadowing, project and He said he would be doing an internship.
“Chambers of Commerce across the state know their local businesses better than anyone, so we can identify what Kentucky’s small, medium and large employers need to fill and create technology jobs. We’re asking Congress to take the lead in doing this,” Sells said.
Sells said Kentucky averages more than 3,400 open computing jobs per month across all regions of the commonwealth, with an average annual salary of nearly $80,000.
Additionally, We Lead CS announced a partnership with INTERalliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping students explore and pursue degrees and careers in technology. INTERalliance connects We Lead CS students with Kentucky businesses.
“Our partnership gives We Lead CS students the opportunity to work with major employers to gain experience and launch a career in computer science. We can’t wait,” said Chris Schmidt, vice president of technology products at 5/3 Bank and co-chair of INTERalliance.
Chambers of commerce that are passionate about improving computer science education for local students will be eligible to apply for small grants. Chambers of Commerce and Industry are encouraged to utilize this funding to establish beneficial programs and support networks in collaboration with nearby universities and IT companies.
“We want our brightest and brightest students to return to their home countries and build their lives here. To build an education system that responds to the needs of students, families, and communities. I look forward to working with you all,” Fletcher told those gathered at the Capitol.
Applications for the We Lead CS Microgrant are currently being accepted and will be accepted until November 15th. Interested chambers and school districts can learn more about the grant program by registering for the webinar on the We Lead CS website. Winners will be announced in mid-December.
