After years of development of “HarmonyOS,” Huawei’s latest update finally blocks the ability to install Android apps entirely, but only after building a large library of supported apps.
Reports last year suggested Huawei was working on a version of HarmonyOS, which started out as a flimsy Android skin with no support for Android apps. Since switching from EMUI to HarmonyOS, Huawei smartphone users have been able to sideload most apps, though they can’t use Google apps like the Play Store.
But even as it prepares for the switch, Huawei has been working hard to convince developers to support HarmonyOS Next. In a press release, Huawei said the updated platform now supports 10,000 apps, covering “99.9% of consumers’ use-time needs.”
Huawei explains (translated):
At HUAWEI CONNECT 2024, Zhu Yonggang, President of Huawei Mobile Cloud, announced that more than 10,000 applications and meta services have been released in the HarmonyOS NEXT application market, meeting 99.9% of consumers’ usage time.
Huawei plans to fully launch this new platform along with new products on September 24th.
The company also unveiled the world’s first tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT, last week.
