Important points
iOS 18 brings significant changes to the layout of the Photos app that are divisive among users. Users can revert back to the old Photos app style by customizing certain settings in the app. Additional customization options in iOS 18 will allow users to further adjust the layout of the Photos app.
After Apple released iOS 18, users have been inundated with new changes and features, including a revamped layout for the Photos app. While iOS 18 brought a lot of interesting user-friendly experiences, including new customization options for the home screen and Control Center, the changes to the Photos app are divisive.
The new Photos app layout is designed to be more dynamic and ever-changing. Currently, the app’s landing page highlights a ton of categories alongside the core photo library. There are collection tiles of recent days, people and pets, and memories. There are also fixed collections such as Favorites, recently saved photos, etc. There are also submenus for media types, utilities, and albums. There are some changes that I like, but they’re so far removed from what we’re used to that they feel confusing and burdensome.
Thankfully, there’s a way to return the Photos app to the layout that many people love after installing iOS 18. Here’s what you need to do:
How to revert the Photos app to the old design in iOS 18 and later
iOS 18 lets you revert the Photos app to what it was before
One of the most divisive changes in iOS 18 are the changes made to the Photos app. If you’re like me and hate change when it comes to the core apps you use, Apple allows you to customize the layout to some extent. Customize and sort settings within the app can help you eliminate some of the tedious options. If you’d like to revert the Photos app to follow its previous layout, you can do so as well.
Apple iPhone 16 Pro
Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro series has some notable upgrades over last year’s iPhone 15 Pro, including a dedicated camera button, a new A18 Pro chip, a larger screen, and several AI-powered Apple Intelligence features. We are prepared.
Here’s what you need to do:
Go to the Photos app. Scroll to the bottom of the Photos app and select “Customize and Sort.” Deselect all collections except Media Types and Utilities. Click the “x” symbol in the top right to confirm.
The Photos app is now reminiscent of its layout in iOS 18 and earlier. Select your media type and utility collection to filter videos and selfies, and continue to access recently deleted photos.
How to sort the Photos app
If you want to learn a little more about the Photos app, check out these tips.
If you want to play around with the new Photos app’s layouts, there are many ways to customize and adjust them. If you go back to the (Customize and Sort) menu, you can add some collections. In iOS 18, you can actually reorganize your collections by dragging each collection up or down in the menu list.
After selecting (Customize and Sort) in the Photos app, you need to do the following to further customize the layout:
Select the collection you want to display in your photos. Choose from options such as Recent Days, People and Pets. Drag the collection using the hamburger symbol on the right. Move up or down each collection according to your preference. Click the “x” symbol in the top right corner to confirm.
Other quality of life changes you can make with your photos
Apple has made some strange choices about how you add photos to your library
One of the other annoying changes to the Photos app is the way iOS 18 sorts images within the Photos library. You’ll notice that by default, images are saved based on the date the image was taken, not the date you added it to your library. If you save an image sent to you by a friend or family member, the image may be saved in the center of your library instead of at the end of your timeline. Thankfully, there is a way to adjust this setting to make finding newly saved images easier and faster.
To change sorting options in the Photos app:
Select the Photos app. Swipe up on the screen to scroll through your photo library. Go to the (Sort & Filter) option (arrows pointing up and down). To make this the default, select Sort by most recently added. Click (Display Options) and make sure the (Screenshot) and (Share with you) options are selected. Click the “x” symbol in the bottom right to confirm.
