Local business owners and Hell’s Kitchen community members gathered at the Intrepid Museum Friday to celebrate the winners of our fifth annual Best Of Awards. As usual, the categories for everything from Best Coffee Shop to Best Pet Care were stacked with competitive contenders — and many of this year’s winners and special honorees reflected the neighborhood’s stronghold of female entrepreneurs.

It’s no surprise that Best Bar is one of our most competitive categories — and after thousands of passionate West Siders chimed in with their favorite watering holes, it’s clear that Hell’s Kitchen is the New York neighborhood to go for a good time.
This year, we welcome back a returning champion — last year’s winner, Ardesia Wine Bar (510 W52nd St and 10th Ave) — which has once again taken the top spot for its well-curated wine program, creative cocktails and mocktails, tasty fare, and of course, the warm, accommodating hospitality of owner Mandy Oser and her team.
“Mandy and her team are a Hell’s Kitchen institution,” said reader Nick Vagelatos. “You don’t feel like you’re in a bar, you feel like you’re in a good friend’s living room. So much thought goes into their wine list and bar menu, so all you have to do is show up! You’ll be glad you did!” Ardesia “makes me feel at home no matter what time of day I get there,” added reader JP Pullins, as Piper Nyo noted that Ardesia is “my go-to spot for a meal solo, or if I’m taking friends out in HK to convince them it’s the best neighborhood.” Piper added that “I’m married but I see it’s a cute date spot too and always notice the staff taking care of the daters!”

It’s a sentiment that reader Aditi Rajvanshi agreed with. “You can’t go wrong with Ardesia!” said Aditi. “ A group pre-show hang? Yes! A solo wine night with a book? Yes! A romantic date?? Yes! Pumpkin carving for Halloween 🎃?? Yesssssssss! Great wine selection, kind folks walking you through the world of wine — it’s everything you want in your go-to bar and more!”
And while Ardesia bested the bars of Hell’s Kitchen, there were plenty of other HK hangouts saluted in our reader advocations, including LGBTQ+ hotspot FLEX (405 W51st St bw 9th/10th Ave) which reader George Perdomo-Velez hailed as a “very welcoming very inclusive and neighborhood friendly bar” where “the bartenders are friendly and make you feel like you are the only person there.” One reader even credited the bar for their good fortune, noting that perhaps, due to FLEX’s “best bartenders, strong drinks and friendly patrons” they “get laid every time I come here.”
Many readers cited new dive bar Local 42 (574 9th Ave bw W41/42nd St) as a place that, despite its relatively recent arrival, feels like it’s been a neighborhood staple for years, in part due to bartender Zoe’s warm hospitality. “The best bartender in Hell’s Kitchen,” said reader Jeffrey Gillard, adding that “she’s very pleasant and professional” and the bar has a “great selection” that’s “very reasonably priced.” Added San Kelly: “Nice peeps. Good, inexpensive food and nice vibe.”
Those looking for good, inexpensive food and a fun vibe also sought out longtime Hell’s Kitchen dive bar Scruffy Duffy’s — (639 10th Ave bw W45/46th St) where readers cited the top-notch wings, mozzarella sticks and festive happenings. Reader Jacquelyn Rodenkirch “love(s) the vibe” and cited the bar’s “fun celebration for St Patrick’s Day” as reason to return, while reader Jack Swerdlin noted that Scruffy Duffy’s has “the best vibes. The kindest staff. Fun programming. I always feel at home.”
Literary-themed LGBTQ+ bar The Dickens (783 8th Ave bw W47th/48th St) made the shortlist for the second year in a row, with readers like Destiny Cavalieri noting: “Me and my friends go here almost every weekend!!” “The vibes are amazing and the brunch is to die for!!” added Destiny, noting that the Dickens “we have the best time and amazing service.”
And few readers would be surprised to see multi-time finalist and 2022 champion, Pocket Bar (455 W48th St near 10th Ave) make the list one more for being a place where as reader David Spillane put it, “Every visit feels like a reunion with old friends.” Added David: “This bar has become more than just a spot for drinks – it’s a sanctuary, a place where I’ve found comfort and connection. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted not only by familiar faces but by a warm, inviting atmosphere that feels like home. The staff – Tif, Landon, Orlea and of course, Suzy – are the heart and soul of this place. They know you by name, remember your drink, and always go above and beyond to make sure you’re taken care of, no matter how busy it gets.”
The West Bank Cafe. Illustration: Chelsey HillBEST EATS — DINE IN
When it’s time to dine in Hell’s Kitchen, readers agreed once more that West Bank Cafe (407 W42nd St and 9th Ave) was the place to go for a truly neighborhood feel, live performances and high-quality cuisine. The 2023 winner, currently in the process of raising funds to stay open, has retained its top billing among regulars for, as reader Carmen Lamar Daehler put it, its “ambiance, food (including vegan options), lovely bar, gorgeous cabaret venue and wonderful staff.” Carmen added, “We always enjoy dining there for special events and to bring our out-of-town friends.” A sentiment that was echoed by reader William Dangerfield, who told us that “I have had every special occasion in my life at this restaurant. Their food is delicious and their service is outstanding.”
Many readers also cited West Bank owner and previous Hell’s Hero winner Steve Olsen as their reason to return. “Steve Olsen is the best host ever,” said reader Joel Bernstein. “I’ve been going ever since the place opened — it’s warm and inviting; staff is great; menu and food preparation and service all consistently top-notch. Went to eat in and also get takeout during the pandemic; Steve has always been there for our neighborhood. Bravo!!”
West Side residents were quick to note many other familiar spots as their go-to for dine-in, like longtime Hell’s Kitchen establishment and 2021 winner, 44&X (622 10th Ave bw W44/45th St) where reader Lori Newman recommends ordering the “short Ribs. Always short ribs. Yes, the staff is friendly and the food is all good,” added Lori, “but, the short ribs are like a drug and I am addicted!” Aria Hell’s Kitchen (369 W51st St bw 8/9th Ave) got nods from readers like Nahom Ayele, who cited owner Mark as “a fantastic host and the food, the food is beyond amazing. I have never had a bad meal at Aria.” Nahom, added that they consider it “my favorite spot — I feel at home.”
Steve Olsen from West Bank Cafe picked up his winner award alongside runner up Jaz Rupali from Jaz Indian Cuisine. The award was presented by Rebecca Shalomoff from Silverstein Properties. Photo: Max Guliani
2022 winner Jaz Indian Cuisine (813 9th Ave bw W53/54th St) earned a significant vote for its “fantastic Indian food, great service and drinks and Jaz herself (that) make for a wonderful experience,” said reader Alex Macfarlane. Many readers, like Yogender Vasisht, said Jaz Indian Cuisine was worth seeking out. “My wife and I are visiting America since last three weeks and we have traveled to many states i.e., Kentucky, Washington DC, New York and have eaten food at many Indian cuisine restaurants, “said Yogender, “but Jaz Indian Kitchen NY is surely the BEST for its authenticity, service and ambience.”
The Livanos family-run Molyvos (402 W43rd St, corner of 9th Ave) made its way to the finals for its “delicious, fresh seafood and lamb options, extensive wine list highlighting all the wines of Greece, a cocktail menu showcasing Greek liqueurs with a contemporary twist; the very best In hospitality with a highly professionally and personable staff — what’s not to love!” said reader Glen Mosher, with reader Cyndi Kumor adding that Molyvos is “our go-to place for pre-theatre dining and special occasions.”

The addition of a Best Take Out/ Delivery category gave even more Hell’s Kitchen restaurants a chance to shine — and it was the beloved Empanada Mama (765 9th Ave bw W51/52nd St) that took this year’s inaugural prize for their fan-favorite and delivery-friendly empanadas. The Empanada Mama staff “is fabulous and the empanadas are delicious, fresh, and extremely portable,” said reader Jovier Sanchez. Reader Howard Levitsky praised the 9th Avenue joint’s “terrific food, great variety, very quick delivery” that’s “open later than most restaurants” as reason to order. Nina Kaplan said that Empanada Mama is “simply the most enjoyable restaurant. The food is always fresh and yummy, the drinks are cold and refreshing, and the atmosphere is party fun,” and few could argue with reader Jakob Aebly’s reasoning: “Is there a better hangover food on earth?!?”
This year’s runners up included burger-and-shake spot Cubby’s (630 10th Ave bw W44th/45th St) which reader Charles Guenancia chose for its “incredible value for great quality!” adding that he supported it as a “small but mighty family business.” Reader Shane Handler said: “Cubs Pub is the best burger. Favorite burger has to be the Fat Boy — always puts me back to sleep 😂.”
And new arrival The Handpulled Noodle (354 W44th St bw 8/9th Ave), an uptown favorite which recently opened its third location in Hell’s Kitchen, made its way onto the shortlist for its — you guessed it — hand-pulled noodle dishes crafted from owner Andrew Ding’s childhood recipes. “An iconic Harlem brand has ventured downtown, bringing authentic flavors from Northern China and a dedication to high-quality, hand pulled, and hearty dishes,” said reader Andrew Kyrejko, adding that Handpulled Noodle “is truly a neighborhood brand that has become beloved by New Yorkers throughout the city.”
The Manhattan Plaza Health Club. Illustration: Chelsey Hill BEST PLACE TO WORK OUT
There are sports dynasties — and then there is the W42ST Best Place to Work Out Dynasty. For the fifth straight year, the hard-working workout team at the Manhattan Plaza Health Club (482 W43rd St bw 9th/10th Ave) has climbed to the top of the podium, after nabbing gold in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Readers told W42ST that the large-scale club has a facility, instructor and community for every workout style, with reader Dara Kiese citing “the community. The pool. Good teachers” and “unpretentious vibe” as reasons to jog over to MPHC again and again. Cathay Cline noted that MPHC has “been around for decades and has always been for the neighborhood, not sold out to a big corporation” while Elayne Bohary loves its “TRX class — Ava is the best and makes working out fun!” Reader Constance White considers MPHC “my healing place — I come from Harlem, it does everything for me,” while Jessie Williams told us “We know it’s the best and you know it’s the best. Next question, please.”
And while MPHC took the prize once more, the gym faced a series of strong competitors, including Life Time Sky (605 W42nd St bw 11/12th Ave) which reader Joshua Panley praised for its “Hot DIVERSE crowd”, Ethan Pan praised for its “awesome Alpha and pickleball space and amazing outdoor and cold plunge pools” and Tyler Miller praised for its instructors “Laura D, Austin H are just two of my favorites here,” said Tyler.

Rockys in training threw their weight behind Victory Boxing Club (455 W37th St bw 9/10th Ave) where Emily DeStefano said, “The staff is very welcoming, as well as the owner (John Snow)” and that the team “helps you perfect the craft while being very patient and making sure everything is done effectively.” Added Melissa Yang: “The classes are always challenging, the trainers push you not only physically but mentally to be at your best and overall just the best workout you can have.”

W42ST readers were buzzing with caffeinated enthusiasm for this year’s Best Coffee winner, 9th Avenue newcomer and French-Japanese fusion tea and cocktail lounge Thē Soirēe (796 9th Ave bw W52/53rd St), where reader Chris Wong praised the shop’s “amazing baristas” as well as the “organic, homemade and authentically-crafted” matcha. Anna Bielan told us that Thē Soirēe has the “best people, best coffee and matcha, unique recipes and (a) warm atmosphere” while Stanley Liang recommended other West Siders “check out their cocktails,” adding that his “go-to is the matcha sour!” Carlos Neto said, “Hell’s Kitchen needs more places like this” adding that Thē Soirēe’s “quiet music” and “perfect decoration” make it the “best to get some work done in a nice relaxing atmosphere but also perfect for socializing.” Derek Chang said: “The coffee-based drinks, matcha drinks, and cocktails are all of extremely high quality. The space is also very comfortable and classy, one of the few quiet, relaxing spots in HK that also provides great drinks.”
Readers were also keen to recognize fellow newbie Dot’s Cafe (515 W52nd St bw 10/11th Ave), the latest offering from Ardesia owner Mandy Oser which reader Alizette Zapata considers “the best cafe in the neighborhood. The menu is amazing, everything is made with so much care and always tastes amazing,” adding “the prices are incredible, especially for the area.” Commented reader Luke Hoback: “Daytime at Dot’s, nighttime at Ardesia? And many West Siders were quick to recognize The Jolly Goat (515 W47th St bw 10th/11th Ave) for its high-quality beverages and service — as Nell Snaidas put it, Jolly Goat has “no gimmicks, just amazing coffee and the best baristas”, while discerning coffee enthusiast Malak Shalabi notes that “the owner of the shop roasts the coffee himself. The lattes at Jolly Goat are my #1 favorite — and I come from Seattle, so that is saying a lot.”

It has great brands and J, the owner, will not steer you wrong about what looks good on you” and as reader Rudy Montenegro put it, “because they carry the best fashion and exotic looks for divas like me.”
Mirjana Vicari of Tilly’s Walks. Illustration: Chelsey Hill BEST PET CARE PROVIDER
Readers wagged their tails in approval for this year’s Best Pet Care Provider, the much-loved Mirjana Vicari of Tilly’s Walks. Mirjana, who has been a fixture in the neighborhood for over a decade, “is amazing,” said reader Valentina N, adding that she provides “such good service and care for your pups!” Readers consider Tilly’s Walks “the very best because the owner LOVES dogs, takes excellent care of them, keeps them safe, has convenient scheduling, is friendly and trustworthy and mostly because my pups are SO excited when they are picked up so I know they’re being treated well!” added Melanie Kwiatkowski, a sentiment echoed by Christopher Valerio. “Since I was a doorman she’s been the best ever,” said Christopher. “The care and love she gives to the dogs and the area is one of a kind.”
W42ST readers like Oscar Lobo agreed that Mirjana “is the dog whisperer of dog whisperers” as Kate Burk noted, “We have used various dog walking services over the years and there has not been any better than Tilly’s Walks. Mirjana loves all her dog babies. And they immediately want to be with her, even over us :). We have Vizslas that are active and without needing any training go on Tilly’s walks with perhaps four other dogs — each one immediately liking their walking pals. She takes them on long walks and play time, taking many pictures. They pose for her as a group!! There is no one more wonderful for our babies than Mirjana.”

She needed emergency surgery and I am certain wouldn’t have lasted more than a week. She’s now 11 and she’s in amazing health,” said Scott. “I could never repay what he and the staff have done and continue to do for her.”
And plenty of readers cited 2022 and 2023’s winner, Pure Paws Veterinary Care of Hell’s Kitchen (506 W42nd St bw 10th/11th Ave) as their #1 for thoughtful, compassionate pet care. “They are a real neighborhood vet,” said reader Jennifer Most. “They’re for all your needs no matter how demanding your pup (or other pet) is!” Added Lori Newman: “If I feel I can put my family members care in their hands, they must be the best in Hell’s Kitchen.”

I always feel comfortable here and the cuts are perfect. The clear winner in my book.”
Mandy Oser of Dot’s Cafe. Illustration: Chelsey Hill BEST NEWCOMER
In a category that prevents repeat winners, our Best Newcomer results are always an exciting reveal. And while this year’s winner, Dot’s Cafe (515 W52nd St bw 10/11th Ave), can only be a “newcomer” once, it’s clear that the brightly-colored and cheery daytime coffee shop and cafe has already made a lasting impact on the neighborhood.
“I can’t say enough about Dot’s,” said reader Michael Harari. “The interior is warm and inviting, whether you’re meeting a friend or propping up a laptop to get some work done. The menu —including all-day breakfast options — is rich enough to satisfy any kind of eater (including twists on classics like a bacon, egg and cheese). Add to it the friendly staff, and a small marketplace for artisanal goods, and you have the perfect recipe for a new neighborhood mainstay.”

I love that I can go here to sit, read and write for hours, catch up with a friend, or simply be alone with my thoughts while drinking one of their many teas,” she added. “The service has been so humble and kind every time I’ve been there, and the drinks on the menu make me feel like I’m learning something new on a cultural level. Plus, it’s so gorgeous in the simplest of ways! Such a joy being there.”

The latest Hell’s Kitchen Pocket Bar, Pocket Bar 57 (469 W57th St bw 9/10th Ave), was also a top pick for many a West Sider — as Scott Willis put it, “I love going in here any time of the day. Suzy Darling has done it again…everything about the place is top-notch and fun!” Joseph Ceirante said Pocket Bar 57 has “started off with everything that made the Pocket Bars great and has developed its own identity since opening. Bartenders like Tiffany and Orlea and more make the bar the most fun place to be north of 50th St,” while Cristin Sturchio goes there for “such great interesting conversations — and no one is on their phone.”
The AMT Theater. Illustration: Chelsey Hill BEST VENUE
In a neighborhood that’s unquestionably the beating heart of the city’s arts landscape, there is no shortage of venues producing award-worthy work. But it was one hyperlocal, Off-Broadway house, the AMT Theater (354 W45th St bw 8th and 9th Ave), that took the final bow. The W45th Street theater, which took home Best Newcomer in 2022 and has made a name for itself bringing both world-premiere works and community-forward arts programming to Hell’s Kitchen, is “bringing new voices to the theatrical community,” said reader Randy Schein.
Alex Garrett commented, “The talent that comes through AMT needs to be highlighted more! They also have built a beautiful community of people and theatergoers that are working every day to keep the passion of theater and for it alive in Hell’s Kitchen!” while reader Tracy Newirth finds “the people and the mission” at AMT “warm, generous, enthusiastic and welcoming.” Jack McCleland considers AMT “a great incubator for new American Plays, and a great place for young people to experience theatre” while Josh Greenspan said “no one supports independent artists like AMT.”

AMT is “a gorgeous space for performing,” said Susan Jacks, with a lobby design that showcases “a hint of the history of Hell’s Kitchen: enamel paint, iron bannisters, touches like that.” Joseph Franchini added that AMT is a much-needed “home for smaller theater companies and reasonable ticket prices,” adding that “places like this are disappearing in Midtown!”
Previous winner Birdland Jazz Club, which made the top spot in both 2022 and 2023, also garnered plenty of applause from grateful W42ST readers like Kaye Ure, who said that the club’s “old-world charm” and “great music” were reason to come back for an encore. Visiting the venue, which first opened 1949 at 1678 Broadway (bw W52/53rd St) and has managed to survive in various locations as one of the last remnants of the city’s jazz renaissance, should be on any New Yorker’s bucket list, added Matt Fox, adding that attending Jim Caruso’s “Cast Party on Monday nights in the most ‘New York-y’ thing you can do in this city.”
Hell’s Kitchen’s vibrant cabaret scene got its due, too, as readers like Leila Colbert cited The Green Room 42 (570 10th Ave, corner of W42nd St inside YOTEL) as a place that “always host(s) such interesting performers, a lot of them local to the neighborhood. The space is inviting, the food good and the entertainment is awesome!”
Other readers emphasized the need to keep the spotlight on gems like the West Bank Cafe’s much-loved cabaret space, the Laurie Beechman Theatre (407 W42nd St bw 9/10th Ave) — as they provide the neighborhood with “so many different kinds of shows and such a welcoming environment always — great prices and always a great time,” said reader Hannah May. The Laurie Beechman is “a wonderful cabaret venue that would be sorely missed if it were forced to close,” added Frank Shanbacker.

Hell’s Kitchen has many incredible community organizations where you can lend a helping hand to your neighbors and fellow New Yorkers — and this year, West Side residents sent a special commendation to the Hell’s Kitchen Community Cupboard as an “amazing organization that serves so many neighbors in this community,” said reader Eve F, where volunteers “stock the community cupboard with fresh nutritious food donated and rescued from bakeries, delis and stores in the neighborhood,” said Andie Davis. “It’s a wonderful, committed group of neighbor volunteers who make sure there’s good free food every day for anyone who needs it!”
Martin Brown has volunteered with the cupboard and said that it’s “a diverse and energetic group united to feed folks,” adding that the cupboard is “a great organization that empowers me to love my neighbors through the gift of food.” Judy Brown commented that the cupboard is “so organized and efficient with so many great donors. Most of all, they are feeding so many families — truly an amazing group of volunteers and a vital organization.”

Other W42ST readers like Leonardus van Hensbergen cited the Clinton Community Garden (434 W48th St bw 9th/10th Ave), now celebrating its 40th year on W48th Street as a place for “peace and quiet amid the noise and chaos of Hell’s Kitchen,” while reader Molly Rimes said that she’s “so impressed with how clean and well-kept this garden is! It’s truly an oasis in the neighborhood.”
Many readers hailed longtime volunteer-based educational arts incubator The 52nd Street Project (789 10th Ave bw W52nd/53rd St) as a “special, almost indescribable place,” said Abby Dziura — “It is theater magic!” The 52nd Street Project “teaches kids life lessons that they carry with them,” said Naomi Leigh, “and builds their acting and confidence skills!” while Wendy Soto-Patron notes that “The 52nd Street Project Core Values are perfectly aligned with those of the community and the personal values of each member of their staff.”
And many readers were quick to reaffirm their love for last year’s winner, the neighborhood cleanup nonprofit Litter Legion run by W42ST’s own Catie Savage. Christopher Canfield voted for the Litter Legion “because my family has always felt welcome at their cleanup events, they help with a clear neighborhood need, and Catie Savage, who founded the Litter Legion, is super passionate about the group and the neighborhood.” Jeff MacDonagh added that “Litter Legion is so much more than just trash cleanups… it’s a way for neighbors to come together with common purpose, making HK a cleaner, more attractive, safer space.”
SPECIAL AWARDS Nicki Lindheimer and Luisa Cerutti of Domus. Illustration: Chelsey Hill
W42ST also presented several Special Awards recognizing some of Hell’s Kitchen’s most notable women in business — including the indomitable Luisa Cerutti and Nicki Lindheimer of Domus. Nicki and Luisa, who are preparing to close their cherished W44th Street store after 22 years in business, were praised by countless readers like Ciaran Byrne, who said that “Nicki and Luisa opened their store in those dark days immediately following 9/11 to provide New Yorkers with a little love and light, and they have continued to do so ever since. DOMUS is a little gem of magic.” Luisa told the crowd that it was “an emotional decision” to close Domus, “because we love you,” said Luisa. “If we were financially savvy we would have closed two years ago,” she laughed. And while Domus 1.0 is about to take its final bow, Luisa told the crowd to stay tuned to the store’s website and socials for the beloved brand’s next iteration. “You have become our family, and we have become yours — so please stay in touch,” she added. “It’s not a goodbye, but an arrivederci.”

Amalia Sarmiento of the much-loved Arriba Arriba also earned a special nod for her 40 years in business, with readers like Jesse Rodriquez telling W42ST “It’s my go-to for Mexican food and strong margaritas. Some of the staff members have been there as long as I have lived in NYC, almost 17 years. Amalia, the owner, is just so warm and sweet. She gives me a big hug every time I walk in, it makes you feel like you are part of the family.” Amalia accepted the honor, thanking the community for helping and supporting Arriba Arriba for so many years, and adding, “we will keep going!”

When it comes to legacies, Lili Fable of Poseidon Greek Bakery knows a thing or two. Lili, who has been part of the century-old 9th Avenue bakery for as long as she’s been alive, has also been one of the principal organizers of the annual 9th Avenue Food Festival for nearly five decades. West Siders like Nicolae Rita consider Posedon a beloved fixture of the community, calling it a “very old school New York” and “a very authentic shop” where “everything is delicious and made with love.” Lili, who not only works on 9th Avenue but also lives above the bakery, told the crowd and presenter Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, “We’ve been around a long time — and we wouldn’t live anywhere else. When my father heard that all the Greeks were going to Astoria,” added Lili, “he said, ‘I’m staying on 9th Avenue — let them come to me.’”

Laura Maioglio of Barbetta also took the stage to accept a special award recognizing the restaurant’s century of service on Restaurant Row, which has seen everyone from Andy Warhol to Lin-Manuel Miranda walk through its doors. Carlis Retiff said, “Walking through the door of the Astor Mansion on Restaurant Row, I’m immediately transported to another time and place. Old world service and authentic Italian cuisine. When I’m asked to recommend a special occasion evening, without hesitation, I say, “Barbetta”. All have amazing experiences.” Laura sent a message for Phil to read to the crowd, thanking her staff for making sure that her father’s culinary legacy lives on. “As you know, Barbetta is a very special place for me,” wrote Laura. “My dad would be proud to know Barbetta is still going after all these years.”
