FE Tech and Skills and Education Group shortlisted in prestigious Learning Technology Awards
FE Tech, in collaboration with the Skills and Education Group, has been shortlisted in the prestigious Learning Technologies Awards 2024 in the ‘Best Use of AI in Learning’ category.
This innovative project involved the creation of an online workers’ rights course, developed in Romanian, providing Romanian-speaking workers in the UK with vital knowledge about their rights and protections.
FE Tech, backed by the Home Office, in collaboration with the Skills and Education Group and accredited by leading accreditation body the Skills and Education Group Awards, has used advanced AI technology to overcome language barriers and make education more accessible to marginalised workers. The course utilises a range of AI tools including AI voice cloning and Romanian translation.
The project was praised for the innovative way FE Tech designed the course, creating a way for non-native English speakers to learn key skills and knowledge online in ways never before possible.
The Learning Technology Awards are recognised globally as the highest accolade available to those working in the learning technology sector. The award positions FE Tech as a pioneer in using AI to address important societal challenges. Both organisations are using AI to contribute to making learning more inclusive and accessible, particularly in the Further Education (FE) sector.
“Being nominated in the Best Use of AI category at the Learning Technology Awards is a proud moment for us as an organisation. It proves that we are at the forefront of learning design and the use of AI, working with our partner Skills and Education Group to create high impact projects for students around the world. Massive congratulations to our instructional design team for such an incredible job – this recognition speaks volumes to their hard work and dedication.”
James Earl, CEO of FE Tech
“We are very proud to partner with FE Tech on this course, which will make a real difference in eradicating labour exploitation and provide Romanians across the UK and Romania with knowledge of their workers’ rights. Every individual has the right to access fair work that is free from exploitation and this course is a step towards making that a reality. This is a resource available in other languages and anyone interested should definitely get in touch to find out more.”
Scott Forbes, Deputy CEO, Skills and Education Group
The course, which addresses a critical gap in the UK labour market – over 30% of migrant workers face language barriers – has already received fantastic feedback. Thanks to AI translation and voice cloning, FE Tech and Skills and Education Group have been able to roll out the course quickly and cost-effectively, without sacrificing quality or engagement.
The project, developed in collaboration with partners such as the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) and the Romanian Consulate, is already making a visible difference in the fight against labour exploitation: learners report increased confidence in identifying and addressing exploitative working conditions, and Skills and Education Group plans to spread the initiative to a further 10,000 people through social media content.
