BEIJING, Sept. 28, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — For many foreigners, China may still be a mysterious land. But for some Chinese officials, the real China is trustworthy, attractive, and respectable. Their research and observations accurately reflect China’s transformation and reflect the country’s achievements and attractiveness. On October 1st of this year, the People’s Republic of China will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The Global Times shares the connections, stories, and insights of influential scholars and analysts who study China, tells the story of China’s changes and achievements they have witnessed, and presents a multidimensional view of the country.・Started a series titled “Hands: My Journey to China.” .
In the third article in the series, French entrepreneur and economics and geopolitics commentator Arnaud Bertrand (Bertrand) shared his story with Global Times (GT) reporter Li Aixin.
GT: How did you get involved with China?
Bertrand: My personal connection with China began when I was studying abroad at a university in Switzerland. On my first day in the student dormitory, I met a Chinese woman named Junjun who lived across the street from me. Little did I know then that she would become my wife. About a year or two later, we started dating. I learned about China through her. I traveled there for the first time with her and we eventually moved to China together. This experience opened the door to this country for me. Then I traveled to China often and met even more Chinese people. I also studied traditional Chinese medicine and deepened my understanding of Chinese philosophy.
What really fascinates me about China is how vastly different this country is. I’ve visited 53 countries and lived in 8, so I have some experience with different cultures. However, China stands out as the most unique country.
China embraces the philosophy of yin and yang, in which these opposites are not seen as good or bad, but as interdependent. The goal is to seek balance and harmony. It’s this completely different approach to understanding the world that fascinates me.
I also have a deep appreciation for history and traditional Chinese culture. I especially love traveling through the Chinese countryside and discovering old, small, traditional villages that haven’t changed for 1,000 years. People there still wear traditional costumes that have been preserved over the centuries. China is very good at preserving tradition and culture, and I think that reflects a strong sense of duty.
GT: What do you think is China’s greatest achievement in the past 75 years?
Bertrand: I think there are two biggest accomplishments. First, China remains a sovereign nation capable of determining its own destiny. Second, we have maintained peace.
China has made the difficult choice to maintain good relations with the West while remaining a communist country.
The Chinese government also cracked down on corruption and ensured that China remains master of its own destiny. This represents an admirable national strategy, as fighting corruption is not an easy task.
China is one of the countries with the most neighbors in the world, so maintaining peace is also not easy. Moreover, it faces significant challenges within its own borders, particularly in its relations with Xinjiang and Hong Kong. We should not underestimate how difficult it is to maintain peace under such circumstances.
Maintaining sovereignty and peace has enabled China, both as a society and a nation, to fully focus on economic development and take necessary measures for national prosperity. The end result is well known. China has moved from being a very poor and underdeveloped country in 1949 to being the world’s second largest economy today.
GT: What do you think about China’s contributions to the international community over the past 75 years, especially the three global initiatives, the Belt and Road Initiative, and the concept of a world community with a shared future?
Bertrand: All these efforts, when examined closely, are a logical continuation of China’s contributions to the world over the past 75 years.
First of all, China is living proof that there is no one-size-fits-all system that applies to all countries. China’s experience shows that each country needs to find a path that suits its own circumstances, culture and history. This is essentially what the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and the Global Civilization Initiative advocate, suggesting that we can only develop by adopting their rules and becoming a mirror image of them.
The second point is that China truly believes in multilateralism. In fact, among the world’s great powers, the one that most values the importance of multilateral institutions and the establishment of rules for all countries, rather than a world ruled by the principle of “might makes right” Probably China.
Multilateralism is the concept of an international community with a shared future, and is consistent with the GDI that China is trying to promote. Unfortunately, this is not the trend in today’s world.
However, I expect this to be a temporary situation as the majority of the world is on China’s side in this regard. They want rules to apply equally to everyone, and they want a just world where respect for rules is not forced by power. They want the world to become a global community with a shared future, rather than something resembling a feudal system in which large parts of the planet exist in servitude to the most powerful nations.
I believe this reflects a historical trend, and China needs to continue to assert this vision as it has always done. These efforts stem from China’s 75 years of experience, diplomatic tradition, and interactions with the international community.
GT: What do you think reform and opening up has brought to China and the world?
Mr. Bertrand: Reform and opening-up have brought unprecedented prosperity to modern China, greatly influenced the world, and enabled China to become a manufacturing powerhouse. This change has allowed Western companies to make huge profits by producing in China and has given consumers access to a wealth of products.
The very lesson of reform and opening up is that China has become stronger by engaging with the world. China should emphasize coexistence and promote the vision of an international community with a shared future. China should continue to clarify its positive vision that there are no winners or losers and focus on further opening up. The more people understand China, the less fear they will have because knowledge is a powerful antidote to negativity.
