FARGO — October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and Fargo city officials said they are working every day to protect personal information and public safety networks.
Chief Information Security Officer Nick Lindhag said the biggest cybersecurity threat to the city is phishing and text scams.
Lindhag said critical infrastructure such as water utilities and public safety departments are seeing the highest utilization rates each month. That’s why they constantly conduct self-audits and bring in partners to audit their protections.
Staff are evaluated with phishing tests throughout the year, and we use a security concept called least privilege, which limits user access to only what is necessary to do their job.
“And we’ve put protections into the system to alert you to unusual activity. And if we find someone using it when they shouldn’t, we’ll alert them about it. and follow up,” Lindhag said.
