Four years after Disney+ launched, Disney shut down several other streaming apps and consolidated its services.
DisneyNow etc. are closed
In August, Disney notified customers of various streaming apps that their services would be shut down on September 23rd. As of that date, DisneyNow, ABC, Freeform, FXNow, and Nat Geo TV apps were all no longer available. Their respective streaming websites are still up and running, but the links to the apps have disappeared from the web.
DisneyNow is the predecessor to Disney+, which launched in September 2017 and combines the Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney XD streaming services. A variety of DisneyNow content has migrated to Disney+ over the years, including “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse,” “That’s So Raven,” “The Proud Family,” “Phineas and Ferb” and “Gravity Falls.”
The closure is intended to encourage users to subscribe to Disney+ and Hulu instead.
Disney+ Basic (with ads) costs $7.99 per month, and Disney+ Premium (without ads) costs $13.99 per month. This week, Disney+ launched a paid “additional member” option in response to a crackdown on password sharing.
Hulu’s basic plan also costs $7.99 per month. An ad-free plan costs $17.99 per month. There are also various bundles for Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+.
