PUEBLO — A cybersecurity expert looking to add more diversity to his growing workforce has brought his expertise and job opportunities to southern Colorado.
Colorado State University Pueblo students were introduced to new job opportunities at the CSU Pueblo Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Career Summit and Recruitment Fair on Wednesday.
“Students who come to CSU Pueblo will have the opportunity to engage with a diverse community,” said Armando Valdez, president of Colorado State Pueblo University. “In that diverse community, it better reflects and prepares them for what they are going to engage with and deal with in real life.”
The day-long event focused on diversity and inclusion in the industry. Lauryn Iglehart, director of diversity, equity and inclusion at CISA, said the decision to come to CSU Pueblo was a natural one.
“We chose to come to Colorado State University-Pueblo because of its diversity,” Iglehart said. “We understand that diversity of thought breeds innovation. Diversity of thought, background, and experience. CSU Pueblo is a Hispanic-serving institution, with more than 37% of our students being Hispanic. We know that and we aim to diversify the Cybersecurity Infrastructure Security Agency system.”
First-year student Jasmine Montoya said she is looking forward to networking for future jobs so she can set an example for her family.
“I have brothers in the military, and they’re all younger than me, so creating a platform for them to grow and see, but also just expanding the breadth of what people like me can do, there is.”
As technology continues to evolve, experts and educators say we need a more diverse group of cybersecurity professionals to keep people safe in the digital space.
