AT&T has a new Internet gateway that combines fiber wired Internet products with 5G-based wireless broadband options. On Wednesday, carriers will announce new devices that can act as fiber-optic modems and routers as well as connect to carriers’ 5G networks if their wired networks go down.
The new product will be available starting Wednesday for “select new AT&T Business Fiber customers ordering speeds of 1Gbps or higher” in Arkansas, California, Kansas, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas. . The option will be available nationwide from “early next year.”

If you are a business user who requires this feature, you will need a new modem/router (called “CGW452”). The new gateway has an “automatic failover and recovery” feature that detects if the fiber network goes down and automatically switches your internet connection to 5G. When the fiber network comes back online, the device returns to using that connection.
AT&T’s new business modem supports both fiber and 5G connectivity. It also works as a Wi-Fi 6E router.

The carrier says the move is designed to “seamlessly” switch between the two connectivity options, so you could theoretically not even notice you’ve moved from fiber to 5G. AT&T says you can expect 5G speeds of 25Mbps to 300Mbps on its wireless network, but the company says the service has no data caps and won’t charge overage fees.
In addition to being a modem, the new device also functions as a Wi-Fi 6E router.
An AT&T spokesperson told CNET that the company is working on consumer products that will be available “in the coming months” for users of both fiber and wireless services. Ta.
