BIBA is a brand name known by many for its positioning in the ethnic apparel market. BIBA is one of the brands that popularized ethnic wear while many competitors have come up in the last few years.
BIBA was founded in 1988 by Meena Bindra, who has also appeared in famous Bollywood films. Bindra has reportedly designed costumes for veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan’s films such as ‘Baghban’ and Hrithik Roshan’s film ‘Na Tum Jaano Na Hum’. But BIBA’s success is not the only important part of the story; the brand’s journey is what sets it apart.
Bindra got married at the young age of 20, shortly after graduating from Delhi University. This early transition into married life shaped her future in ways she never expected.

A few years later, at the age of 40, Bindra decided to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams and started selling simple cotton-print clothes from her home. Despite having no formal training in the fashion industry, she was determined to carve a niche for herself.
However, the path to founding BIBA Apparels was fraught with challenges, especially as she lacked the necessary funds and did not even have a bank account in her name. That’s when her husband stepped in to support her.
He helped her secure a loan of ₹8,000 from a bank, which provided the critical start-up capital she needed to launch her business. This funding began her entrepreneurial journey and laid the foundation for what would eventually become a thriving brand.
She reportedly opened her first store in 2004. By March 2012, BIBA’s annual revenue reached around Rs 300 crore. The brand’s popularity continued to grow and by 2023, BIBA had established itself as a significant force in the industry, boasting revenues of over Rs 800 crore.
In 2015, Bindra was awarded the APEX Lifetime Achievement Award, the Indian apparel industry’s premium award given annually by the Garment Manufacturers Association of India.
